It was not long after I had finished my first album project that my good friend, Kwaku Jesse, asked me to come on a charity field trip to The Gambia to work on youth and educational projects.
Now Kwaku Jesse knows that I am more than a rapper – I’ve been a teacher, I mentor ex-offenders and I support a lot of social and community projects.
Anyways… I remember trying to convince the director of my department (this was when I was working full time) to let me go, and I was very determined to go by any means necessary!
And I’m glad that I persisted because going out there was such a memorable experience. From the wonderful smiling people of The Gambia to eating the sweetest of watermelons (straight from the ground) or sitting back in the village gazing at the stars.
In the day we were clearing the land in preparation for building a community centre, and we were like the phrase “mad dogs and Englishmen” as we were out in the midday heat working and sweating. The locals, very wisely were in the shade at the hottest time of the day!
We also did lots of educational and youth activities with the young people there. You can see the amount of fun I had here
Being connected to my roots; being connected to my ancestors and giving back is such an emotional and spiritual journey that it’s hard to describe in words. Something that comes close to it is a song I did called “Libation” and this song always reminds of my sweet experience of The Gambia.
On this song it features UK soul legend, Omar (remember “There’s nothing like this”). Omar is an absolute soul legend in the UK and some might even label him as the god father of Neo Soul – I know D’Angelo and Erkyah Badu have listed him as one of their influences.
Omar absolutely nailed it on this track and gave it that little oomph that only Omar can do. I’m honoured to have worked with this great creative and make a really special song.
So as a thank you for being one of my subscribers I want to share this track with you. You can download it for FREE – no strings attached.

If you’re feeling the track you might also want to consider checking out “Griots Brew”. It’s my latest album and it’s full of songs that would make Omar proud
